Portable solar generators sound like a fantastic idea in theory. They replace a gas generator, which is very loud, produces pollution, and can't be used in confined spaces.
A portable solar generator, in contrast, has a battery or battery pack that gets its power from solar panels. Direct current electricity is made and then goes to a battery. It then goes to an inverter and becomes A/C power. They can be charged by a wall plug-in, and even a car 12 volt connection.
But do they actually work? Will they provide enough wattage and size to truly live off grid. While power needs can vary wildly from somebody on a weekend camping trip to a couple permanently living off grid, we're glad to say that portable solar generators can go much further than many ever thought possible in meeting your power needs.
First off, a few words of clarification. The term "portable solar generator" is a slight misnomer. It's not a generator in the sense of a gas machine that "generates" power, but actually a power pack with solar panels. The advantage is that you aren't dependent on a steady supply of gasoline as you would with a gas generator. You get your fuel from the Sun, which should last about 5 billion years (give or take a billion - the universe is an unpredictable place). While there are some challenges with solar power generators, such as inclement weather affecting the level of power generation and getting used to the capacity of these generators -- we believe they are an incredible alternative to noisy gas generators.
