GoSun is taking its message of solar-powered sustainability to an ever widening audience. Last Friday it got the chance to pitch its product to Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary, known as "Mr. Wonderful," in an online competition on Start Engine.
GoSun received the People's Choice Award in the virtual competition. Here's how BizJournals breaks down the competition:
GoSun was one of five finalists chosen in the competition. Thousands applied, the company said. CEO and founder Patrick Sherwin had five minutes to sell GoSun as an interesting and innovative business. The first-place winner received a $10,000 grant.
Sherwin, a solar designer, consultant and developer, founded GoSun Stove in 2013. The company makes solar ovens, coolers, chargers, lighting products and more.
This wasn't his first run-in with O’Leary. Sherwin pitched GoSun on ABC’s “Shark Tank” in 2014 but declined the offer, opting instead to start a crowdfunding campaign. GoSun has since successfully crowdfunded eight solar innovations.
“We don’t feel like we need to forfeit our control over our business and our brand and I don’t feel like they need to own my face,” Sherwin told the Courier at the time.
