In early September 2019, the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and parts of Georgia were under a state of energy in anticipation of Hurricane Dorian. When Dorian makes landfall it is expected to knock out parts of the grid in many areas of these states. With this in mind, experts recommend putting together a hurricane preparedness kit for you and your family that can last for a minimum of seven days.
Here are some of the absolute essential items for any basic kit recommended by FEMA.
Water: 1 gallon per person for seven days. This is for drinking, cooking, and personal sanitation.
Food: Enough for seven days. Pack non-perishable canned food and juices. Remember to pack a manual can opener, along with paper plates and plastic utensils.
First aid kit
Tools: This includes a flashlight, battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible), extra batteries, and a Swiss Army knife.
Toiletries
Clothing – Include a complete change of clothes, along with thick-heeled shoes to protect from sharp objects and debris lying around post-storm.
Pillows, Blankets and/or Sleeping Bags
Clothing – Include a complete change of clothes suitable for your areas climate. Be sure to include sturdy shoes to protect you from debris or other sharp objects you may encounter outdoors post-storm.
